Revisited: Julie Golob Talks About Firearms Safety

Julie Golob, acclaimed shooter and a firearms enthusiast, talks about firearms safety and lends credence to the efforts of shooters nationwide as they make ranges, neighborhoods and homes safer. Julie draws attention specifically to the Project ChildSafe initiative that has worked in conjunction with civilians and law enforcement agencies for more than two decades.

There are few organizations that can proudly say they’ve been in operation for the span of time that Project ChildSafe has been teaming with professional and recreational shooters. As a result, firearms enthusiasts have been able to put their money where their mouths are when they claim that they care about changing the culture. Accidents are down and as an enthusiast myself, I couldn’t be prouder.

Safety has been of the utmost importance to shooters to spread the word that tremendous responsibility and fun can co-mingle through gun training. Julie Golob, multi-medaled professional shooter, sends the message home that safety measures, such as gun locks, are easy to deploy and if any firearm is missing a lock, owners can easily acquire one through most local law enforcement agencies. According to Julie, “Project Childsafe reports the distribution of free gun locks is up to 41 million, and the number of women joining women’s shooting groups and getting their concealed carry permits has also increased.” The proof and effectiveness is in the numbers.

Julie reflects on some of the most profound changes over the last four years alone: “We see more and more female shooters and instructors on social media sharing safe, responsible gun handling, too. We’re continuing to change the negative perceptions that the anti-gun movement pushes about guns, and women and guns.”

Golob points out the fact that fatal firearms accidents are at historic lows. She states that proper storage and education is paramount to safe gun handling, and mentions Project ChildSafe. The NSSF’s Project ChildSafe has been credited with creating educational awareness of gun safety and handling in this country. Started in 1999 (formerly called Project HomeSafe), Project ChildSafe has worked with more than 15,000 law enforcement agencies in the U.S. and provided more than 38 million free firearm safety kits in all 50 states and 5 U.S. territories.
