Bozeman, MT – The Casting for Recovery (CfR) Board of Directors, during their annual retreat, has selected a new executive director. After an extensive national search, Susan Gaetz was tapped to fill the role. Susan has 24 years of experience with the organization.
Charlie Penley, Board Chair of Casting for Recovery said, “Susan has been in leadership positions with the organization since 2010 including stepping in as interim director recently. She has the perfect combination of nonprofit management experience and passion for the women served by the organization. It was a unanimous decision.The Board has every confidence that Susan will build the reputation and expand the organization’s services for women with breast cancer.”
Susan Gaetz began her professional journey with Casting for Recovery as a volunteer in 1999. In 2010, Susan accepted a position with CfR as the first regional program manager, then in 2016 she became the national program director and most recently served as interim director. Also, Susan’s experience and volunteerism goes beyond CfR. Her early career as a photojournalist and editorial photographer focused on health care and underserved populations. She taught for five years as an adjunct professor at the University of Texas at Austin. She served on medical missions for Flying Doctors of America and founded the emergency First Responder program for the Texas Department of State Health Services (formerly Texas Department of Human Services). Susan has a Bachelor of Science in Human Development from Vanderbilt University and a Master of Arts in Journalism from the University of Texas at Austin.

Casting for Recovery® is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides healing outdoor retreats for women with breast cancer at no cost to the participants. CfR’s signature program combines breast cancer education and peer support with the therapeutic sport of fly fishing. CfR currently holds 52 retreats in 42 states annually, serving over 700 women who have experienced breast cancer. Since 1996, CfR has served over 11,000 women nationwide with the help of more than 1,800 volunteers, including oncology medical and psychosocial professionals, fly fishing instructors and program alumnae. Through the connection with fly fishing and nature, the retreats offer opportunities for women to find inspiration, discover new energy for life and experience healing connections with other women.
