‘Cindy Sue and the Lunker Club’: A Book About Fishing for Children of All Ages

Foremost, Cindy Sue and the Lunker Club is a story for kids about how much fun fishing can be. But adults will enjoy this illustrated book by longtime B.A.S.S. Senior Writer Robert U. Montgomery as well.

Sue and the Lunker Club book

Although she doesn’t want to, a young girl goes bass fishing with her grandfather. She quickly learns it’s not nearly as boring as she feared it would be and, in fact, she loves spending time on the water with Pap Pa. And when she also hooks— and loses— a big bass her first time out, she discovers that battling a big one is “better than flying downhill on a roller coaster.”

In real life, Cindy Sue and her grandfather will be help other kids enjoy fishing too. A copy signed by Jimmy Houston, Roland Martin, and Bill Dance will be auctioned by Reel Fishing Charities in Florida to raise funds for its programs. The Bass Fishing Hall of Fame also will include a signed copy in its annual online auction to benefit fish conservation efforts.

fishing Legends

For charities and worthy causes, Houston, Martin, and Dance signed several copies on a page featuring their caricatures, as well as those of B.A.S.S. founder Ray Scott and pro angler Penny Berryman. Scott died in 2022 and Berryman in 2012.

In addition to paying tribute to some of the legends of bass fishing, the book recognizes Florida’s TrophyCatch program, which is where the “Lunker Club” comes from.

Also, Big Sam, a key character in the story, is based on a real-life legend, Sam Griffin, a luremaker, guide, and member of the Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame. Montgomery dedicated the book to his long-time friend who died in 2021.

As arranged by her grandfather, Big Sam is the guide who takes Cindy Sue fishing on her 12th birthday in pursuit of her elusive lunker.

“I’ve really been excited by the early response to Cindy Sue,” Montgomery said. “People love the book. One woman called it ‘sweet’ with ‘beautiful illustrations’ and encouraged people to buy the book for themselves as well as their kids. A man said he was going to buy copies for his ‘future grandchildren.’ And I’ve had four bulk orders of 10 books or more.”
