Now entering its 15th year, Casting for Recovery (CFR), a national non-profit organization that supports women recovering from breast cancer, is pleased to announce that two new states will hold retreats in 2011: Utah (supported by a grant from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Salt Lake City Affiliate) and Nebraska. These new state programs are being added thanks to continued support from its premier sponsor, The Hartford, and to national sponsors including new sponsor L.L.Bean, as well as from program donors, and the dedicated efforts of volunteers and staff.
Recently profiled by the New York Times (“On the River, An Escape From the Hospital,” 11/11/10), Casting for Recovery has scheduled a total of 45 retreats in 32 states for 2011, with additional retreats planned in New York, Massachusetts, Montana, and Oregon to better serve more women at any age and stage of treatment and recovery from breast cancer at no cost to them. The program’s growth across the U.S. since it was founded in 1996 is a testament to its “ripple effect” that helps women focus on moving beyond diagnosis and treatment to address quality-of-life issues.
“It is always so uplifting when we welcome new programs and sponsors to the Casting for Recovery family,” states Lori Simon, Executive Director. “Yet, unfortunately, we still turn away almost three times as many women as we serve due to lack of capacity. Our 2014 goal is to provide at least one program in all 50 states and with the support of our dedicated volunteers and sponsors, we will meet that goal.”
