They’re called New Year’s Resolutions, a common tradition whereby an individual resolves to change an undesired trait or behavior, to accomplish a personal goal or otherwise improve life.
That sounds pretty onerous. How about planning for the New Year with a focus on relaxing more and enjoying more family and friend time? I like that a lot better and those are elements that have been traditionally included in New Year’s Resolutions.
And when you think about possibilities for your 2020 plan, what could be better than boating? It encompasses being close to family and friends, as well as nature. Boating offers the opportunity to learn something new, fosters discipline by giving jobs to everyone on board and is relaxing. Boating also provides the opportunity to visit new places, exploring, trying new foods and a whole lot more.
My husband Vic and I have had the good fortune to operate our charter and live-a-board sailing school in Southwest Florida for 35 years. Throughout that time period, we have met many families who looked upon boating as a way to make their lives more enjoyable. I’m pleased to note that along the way they have become our friends and we are now enjoying expanded relationships with new generations of family members who have made boating a part of their annual plans.
Here are some reasons why boating has strong appeal. For one, our cruising area is open for business 24/7 throughout the year. You don’t have to fight crowds, our barrier islands offer many options for overnight stays, dining and experiencing nature. If fishing is your thing, there’s a wide variety of sportfish you can pursue. The same can be said for Mother Nature’s other creatures, as well and their presence on our barrier islands.
Overall, boating is a chance for family members and friends to really connect. Crew members rely on one another and boating fosters real, face-to-face communication. That’s right, talking not texting with all onboard enjoying every aspect of boating from discovering new places to simply enjoying beautiful sunsets.
If you’re putting together your 2020 plan and want to focus more on relaxation and quality time with family and friends, give boating your consideration. I’m confident you will be pleased with the results. Happy New Year!
