Guru Huntress: Trophy Bag Kooler Kit at the top of her hunting ‘don’t forget’ list

As my hog hunt in Liberty, Miss., nears, I am excited about the possibility of field testing a product that I have been anxiously waiting to use. I received this product during the late fall hunting season and was not successful at taking a late-season buck. This product is something that many hunters overlook but the importance of this product is crucial to anyone who plans to consume the fruits of their hunts.

As a woman hunter and the cook in our household, I understand how critical it is to keep bacteria from growing on raw meat, and also how proper handling and storage is crucial for consumable food and more importantly meat because of the high decomposition rate of raw meat. This product safeguards raw game meat – from the field, to processing, to the freezer. The convenient-to-use Fresh Game System with the Trophy Bag Kooler are important in keeping your game bacteria free. The system is reusable and packs into a handy carrying case for easy traveling or storage.

For proper handling of game meat, you must keep it cool and dry to keep the growth of bacteria to a minimum. Time and time again I hear hunters talk about how important it is to get a fresh harvest gutted; however I never hear the concern about getting the meat cooled. Deterioration can start as quickly as 30 minutes in a warm climate of 90 degrees; in the South, high temperatures are common during early to mid-season.

The Trophy Bag Kooler is a portable bag designed for short-term storage and transportation of game. The bag is made of a durable, water-resistant 600 Denier Polyester outer shell and comes available in taupe, tan and two popular camouflage colors. The bag incorporates a thermal radiant barrier energy shield technology to maintain proper temperatures and anti-microbial properties to eliminate bacteria growth.  The bag is designed with slide lock draw stings leg holes and antler flaps to keep flies from entering the bag.

The bag is easy to use and is capable of fitting many different game animals like deer, hog, antelope and turkey. The interior of the bag can maintain temperatures of 36 degrees and colder. The recommendations for lowering the temperatures in the bag are to use double-bagged ice or KoolerGel.

KoolerGel is a unique product that, when mixed in a container with water and then frozen, will last 30 percent to 50 percent longer than regular ice. The chemical comes conveniently packaged in premeasured envelopes and is simple to mix up in containers of your choice of size and shape. The mixed frozen gel has been found to stay colder longer than ice or artificial ice packs.

Another crucial product in the system is the Game Fresh Spray. Game Fresh Spray is a USDA approved anti-microbial spray that kills bacteria on contact keeping harvested game bacteria free and fresher longer. Simply spray the interior cavity of game or any raw meat that is exposed to air to guard against airborne contaminants or bacteria.

The Game Fresh System containing the Trophy Bag Kooler, Game Fresh spray and KoolerGel received the North American Hunting Club Field Tested Seal of Approval and has been field tested and proven by many hunters from different regions. The bag can be bought separate or in a package deal with the KoolerGel. For more information about this unique product, watch videos of the bag in use or for testimonials by consumers go to www.trophybagkooler.com. You can find this product online at Bass Pro Shops, Sportsman’s Guide and Cabela’s. New for 2010 is a smaller bag ideal for smaller game such as does, smaller hogs and turkeys. I will be sure to pack this product on my future hunts and can now rest assured that I do not have to rush to find a processor in unknown territory; it is already on my list of gear to pack for the hog hunt.

Wendy, Thanks for commenting here at The WON, and yes, our Guru Huntress keeps us on our toes about what’s important — like keeping that wild game meat cool enough to process well.

Looks to be a good product for the long trip away from the cooler. It would definately benefit the Southern Climate hunter. Especially during the warm bow seasons we have here in Georgia. Would like to know the ease of putting the game into it. A smaller version would be great for Turkey hunting.

Sounds like a promising product for sure! I am going to check out the smaller size for a fast approaching turkey hunt. Thanks for a great tip!!

Looks like a handy thing to carry in your truck all year.. could be used for a lot of things.. temps here aren’t as warm, but in the early archery season is still gets darn warm in the day time.. and I ‘personally” won’t hunt when it gets that warm.,, unless i know I can get home with the meat quickly and put in straight into the freezer to cool out.. so it would be really interesting to hear more about this product.. and the kooler jel sounds like the ticket for sure.. thanks Nancy Jo
