Gun Storage Week, sponsored by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, is a national campaign that encourages all gun owners to check their firearm storage practices, and take action to make sure their firearms are safely secured. It takes place twice a year – June 1 to 7 and September 1 to 7. At “Women’s Outdoor News,” we signed on to this practice of safe gun storage from the beginning of this publication (back in 2008) and have featured tips on how to make gun storage applicable, affordable and adjustable to your lifestyle throughout the years.
Last year, Jackie Richardson highlighted a few of our posts regarding this topic of storage and solutions – especially in the areas of gun safes, big and small. Check out the recommendations from women such as pro-shooter Becky Yackley and firearms trainers Avery Skipalis and Michelle Cerino in this post.
Keep Your Finger Off the Trigger and Other Gun Safety Principles
Avery reminds us that when handling gun, it’s essential to remember the principles of gun safety and runs through them in this post. She writes, “One of the most fundamental rules of firearm safety is to assume that a firearm is always loaded, even if you believe otherwise. This mindset helps eliminate complacency and ensures careful handling at all times. When handling a firearm, check to confirm if it is loaded by safely inspecting the chamber and magazine. Even after verifying that it is unloaded, continue treating the gun with the same caution.”
Gun Storage Furniture
Stacy Bright educated us about the values of using well-constructed, gun-concealment furniture in her article, “Liberty Home Concealment Hall Bench.”
This company is still in operation near where I live in Missouri, and has added to its gun storage options. I use one of its storage items in my home, and have been satisfied with its performance throughout the years.
Michelle Cerino also reviewed another item from Liberty Home Concealment, the Freedom Series coatrack.
Storing Firearms While Traveling
Courtney Nicholson touches on the topic of safe gun storage while traveling with guns.
