Making Beer Bread from Lisa Bass’s ‘Daily Sourdough’ Book

Recently I was gifted a copy of Lisa Bass’s book titled “Daily Sourdough.” I’ve been cooking my way through the recipes, and have made her version of beer bread repeatedly. Lisa, who you may know by her Instagram handle “Farmhouse on Boone,” is a mom of 8 sharing from scratch recipes via her social media and printed platforms. I am still a novice when it comes to sourdough; I appreciate recipes that don’t require days of prep time. This beer bread ticks the boxes for a filling, tasty dinner side that can be whipped together quickly in the hour before meal time, using sourdough discard.

Here’s an excerpt from the website selling her book:

“This book isn’t just about baking sourdough bread, though you’ll get plenty of delicious sourdough bread recipes. But Lisa shares how easy sourdough can be and a natural part of your everyday life, one that produces healthy and delicious food for your family at every meal.”

Making Beer Bread

One thing I appreciate about Lisa’s recipes is that they call for regular, staple ingredients found in most pantries. One thing I appreciate about beer bread in general is that the flavor can be tweaked based on the kind of beer used in the mixture. Today, I chose a brownish ale with strong flavor from Mother’s Brewing Company, which is based down the road from me in Missouri.

Beer Bread ingredients

I followed the recipe, stirring together the ingredients and then pouring the batter into a greased loaf pan.

I baked the bread for 50 minutes before removing it from the oven. After it cooled slightly, I sliced, buttered and served the beer bread with my take on hot and sour soup. I followed this recipe, but subbed in ground venison for the chicken and tofu. This meal was warm and hearty, perfect for a winter’s evening.
