Part 2: How to Get Her Back Out to the Gun Range

Walther pro-shooter Michelle Waldran gave us some great tips in this post, “How to Get Her Out to the Gun Range,” that we ran recently. Find out how to augment her journey into the world of shooting, and how to get her back out to the gun range.

So you finally agreed to go to the gun range and had a great time. So why are you not planning your next range day?

You’ve convinced yourself you did well; why would I need to go again? You may be where I was when I first started my journey. There are many excuses why you “don’t need to go.” But remember, there is a reason why you decided to go in the first place. Whether it’s because you want to protect yourself and your loved ones, just for fun, or your husband insists you learn how to use a gun because he has firearms in the house. All are good reasons you need to be proficient; firearms handling is a perishable skill.

Strategies to Get Her Back Out on the Gun Range

Check with the gun range you went to; they have so many resources. See if they have a women’s group, that pairs experienced shooters with novices to offer guidance, support and encouragement. Joining a group with other women on your path helps build confidence and skills, such as A Girl and A Gun or Gun Owners of America. The latter group even has an online membership, so you can be in the group remotely.

Girl Group

Do you want to avoid being in a group setting with strangers? Then, find a female instructor near you for private one-on-one training. Or grab your girlfriends and make it into a fun girls’ trip if there isn’t one near you. If you can’t travel, host a private class for women led by a female instructor at your home range; most will travel to you. Feel free to reach out to me at my website, too.  If you live in my area, or are traveling, let’s talk. Receiving information from a female’s perspective will help you learn techniques tailored for women. You are making the experience more enjoyable and less intimidating.

Focus on your skills and development at home. Yes, you can become proficient with your firearm in your home. Here is a quick tip on acquiring a sight picture and understanding trigger control.

Remember, skill development and personal growth allow you to track your progress and set goals.

Learn the basics of how to clean your gun. Believe it or not, I felt so empowered when I cleaned my gun for the first time without help! This video will help you.

Lastly, get influenced! This publication, “Womens Outdoor News,” is an excellent resource for all things women’s interests. There, you will find testimonials and success stories from women who enjoy shooting, hunting, field crafts and much more. Find women who share their stories of why they started their firearms journeys, which can inspire you to continue.

Here are a few of my favorite instructors who share unbiased reviews, training, and safety information with children in mind: Elizabeth Bienas, Katie Ball and Stephanie McGanty.

Remember, taking a short break is OK, but don’t be gone too long. Taking the first step today is critical to ensuring safety for yourself and your loved ones.
