Revisited: Modeling Proper Firearms Handling

Modeling proper firearms handling is the keystone to children and other watchful eyes learning about how to wield the weighty responsibility of gun ownership. Micro-opportunities are hiding everywhere to bring them in on the traditions surrounding respecting firearms and securing them as well.

Becky Yackley, in conjunction with the NSSF’s Project ChildSafe mission to “own it, respect it, secure it,” zeroes in on how precisely gun owners and handlers can take action. Whether its dynamic training, training conditions or a more relaxing session on the range, firearms discipline, cleaning and a safe storage area are key processes.

Aside from modeling proper firearms handling for self-assurance, roping in the family unit is a great way to build bonds. Older children in particular can learn the ropes of basic safety and care. Certainly, the kind of respect earned through proper care pays dividends on making it a judicious extension of the self on the range. ~IBR

My PCS Story: Modeling Proper Firearms Handling

We can take them to classes, spend days on the range, hunt with them, compete with them … and every step of the way, all of the small things we do and the manner in which we navigate the activities with firearms will color their perception of guns. Respect will beget respect. And small things that we do over and over will become the life-long habits that they carry with them and can pass down to their children.

Part of respectful care of firearms means having a safe storage solution for guns in our home. Involving children who are old enough in this is another way they learn respect and proper firearms handling. Learning to wipe down the metal parts of guns before we store them, as well as always making sure firearms are empty when we put them in or take them out of the safe – that first step in handling every firearm – are important steps that you can teach your children.
