In 1983, in preparation for the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) created a dedicated counter-terrorism unit known as the Hostage Rescue Team (HRT). According to the FBI’s website, this elite group of agents responds to hostage situations, barricaded suspects, as well as performed high-risk arrests, undercover operations and surveillance operations. In 1998, the FBI contracted Springfield Armory to supply the pistols for the elite HRT. Now, 40 years later, the TRP family of pistols (based on the SA Professional 1911 chosen by the HRT) offers six new models.
First, in case you didn’t know, TRP is an acronym for Tactical Response Pistol. Springfield Armory first launched the TRP family as an affordable answer for everyday citizens to have a semi-custom 1911 similar to the custom Professional model, which was designed based on the needs of the FBI’s HRT. Following are some of the features of the TRPs that every 1911 enthusiast more than likely will appreciate.

Hand-Fit
Each frame and slide are hand-selected and paired for a premium fit. This allows for a smooth yet tight fit.
Sights
The sights of each TRP are a tritium three-dot sight system. These are great in low light conditions plus, the serrated rear sight reduces glare and can be used for a tactical rack.
Some of the other features of all the pistols in the TRP family include:
There are now three different models in the TRP family, with two variations in each.

I handed the 1911 TRP to my son, who appreciates a well-built 1911. His first comment was, “Boy, that slide fits tight. This is a nice gun.” Then, after he dry-fired a bit, I asked him what he thought of the VZ Hydra G-10 grips. He said, “The grips are definitely aggressive; however, I know that pistol won’t slip in my hands if I start to sweat.” Yep, he would love to add the 1911 TRP to his collection.
