The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) announced March 10 that it had withdrawn its proposal to ban 5.56mm M855 ammo, known as “green tips” after receiving tens of thousands of comments from the public opposing the ban. The ammo is popular with target shooters and small game hunters because of its affordability, and is a common caliber found in AR-15 rifles.
The BATFE had announced plans to ban certain types of M855 ammo through implementation of a proposed “sporting exemptions” framework. The BATFE claims M855 is armor-piercing, and the proposed framework would have banned M855 because the ATF said it feared the round could be used in a semi-automatic handgun. This type of ammo has been considered exempted for sporting purposes since 1986
