As an avid angler, I respect the dangers of the sport and am a strong advocate for use of a Personal Floatation Device (PFD) when on or near the water’s edge. Conditions on the water can change at a moment’s notice, and having the right PFD is essential for survival. That being said, as a woman with a curvy figure, finding the right PFD has proven to be a difficult task. I personally find most PFDs do not adjust in all the right places, they are bulky and limit mobility (which creates its own set of safety concerns) or they are made of non-breathable material and just downright uncomfortable. Being uncomfortable while fishing is simply no fun!
Last spring, however, I stumbled upon the Mustang Survival Deluxe Inflatable PFD. The Deluxe Inflatable is a lightweight and flexible life vest without the bulk of a traditional PFD. Made of 500D Cordura® material, the vest sits comfortably over both shoulders, connected by a secure back strap and waistband allowing for an adjustable fit. Although the vest is a one-size-fits-most, it adjusts for a custom fit for those with a chest size between 30 inches and 52 inches, and more than 80 pounds. The versatility of the Deluxe Inflatable PFD is especially important to me as there are warm summer days when I chose to wear it over a lightweight t-shirt, or over heavier layers in cold winter weather. I know whatever I am wearing, the Deluxe Inflatable PFD will fit properly and help keep me safe. The vest’s low profile also allows for maximum mobility and does not “hang up” when moving around the boat or while fighting a monster fish. I primarily wear my vest for fishing, although its fit is also perfect for sailing, boating, paddle sports and hunting.
What sets the Mustang Survival Deluxe Inflatable PFD apart from conventional PFDs is its advanced inflation technology. The Deluxe Inflatable PFD comes in both a manual inflation (Model No. MD3085) or automatic inflation (MD3087) option. I chose the manual inflation for myself. With the manual inflation PFD, I can chose to inflate the vest as necessary by pulling a simple pull tab easily accessible on the bottom of the vest. Whereas, with the automatic option, the vest will inflate the moment it is fully submerged in water. The inflation systems on the Deluxe Inflatable PFD are both reliable and low maintenance.
If the vest is inflated, a simple “Re-Arm” kit can be purchased from Mustang Survival to re-set the vest and make it ready for use once again. Prices of the “Re-Arm” kit average about $30, depending on whether you are using the manual or automatic inflation option. The Deluxe Inflation PFD also offers a clear safety inspection window over the inflation mechanism so I can quickly see if the inflator is ready for use. As an added safety feature, the inflation cells of the vest are bright yellow with SOLAS reflective tape, allowing rescuers to easily locate the wearer in the water. The vest also comes with a safety whistle and strobe light attachment for added safety measures.
Mustang Survival has been perfecting its line of PFDs for over 45 years. The vest is available in a range of colors (including royal blue, red, pink, orange and navy). Mustang Survival recently added a secure zipper pocket on the front of the vest to ensure cellphones, keys and fishing licenses will stay safe and secure, as well.
After much trial and error, I have to admit I have finally found the right PFD for me! Although the Mustang Survival Deluxe Inflatable PFD is a bit more expensive than other life vests (MSRP $199.99), I find the extra expense is worth the the peace of mind knowing I am wearing a reliable personal floatation device, and knowing I will be comfortable while enjoying my favorite water side activities.
The Mustang Survival Deluxe Inflatable PFD meets United States Coast Guard approval as a Type II Recreational Inflatable PFD (USCG – UL1180 – Inflatable PFDs 160.076 – Type II).
