Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (New York State): Hunter education or trapper education certification

We are once again offering the opportunity for you to receive a Hunter Education Certificate or a Trapper Education Certificate at this Becoming an Outdoors-Woman workshop. These certificates are required for anyone who wants to purchase a hunting or trapping license and actually hunt or trap.

Carefully read all the requirements for each certification below. You must register for and complete specific classes and pass a written test before a certificate will be issued. Successful students will receive their certificates at the end of the workshop.

Home study materials must be completed before you arrive at the workshop. You must register for the workshop by May 24 to be considered for Hunter Education or Trapper Education Certification. This is to ensure that you have enough time to complete the home study.

Requirements for Hunter Education Certification YOU MUST COMPLETE:

At the workshop: Friday Evening

Sunday 8:00 – 11:30 am

Register for one…

1. Internet Hunter Education Home Study Materials: The home study materials are available at http://homestudy.ihea.com Do Not wait until the last minute. The average student takes 12 or more hours to go through all the chapters. Feel free to do this homework with family and friends. Print out the quiz answers and bring them to the workshop.

2. Firearm Safety Seminar: Attend this seminar discussing the safe use of firearms and the basic types of firearms available for hunting and shooting. Students will be able to handle and familiarize themselves with the firearms that will be used in the hunter education and shooting field courses.

3. Hunter Education Class (4E): You must register for and complete this class at the BOW workshop. This class offers a hands-on introduction to all aspects of ethics, firearms safety and hunting safety. This class will conclude with the hunter education course exam.

4. Shooting Course: You must register for and complete a shooting class at the BOW workshop. You must choose one of the beginning shotgun or the Friday beginning rifle course held during the workshop. Returning students who have taken both these courses can be given credit for this requirement so that they can attend other courses. See your choices on back.



The following are your choices for a shooting class. You must register for one of these courses:

1A. Beginning Rifle – Friday Afternoon – Session 1

2A. Beginning Shotgun – Saturday Morning – Session 2 3A. Beginning Shotgun – Saturday Afternoon – Session 3

Hunter Education Certification: All four components listed above must be successfully completed in order to receive your NYS Hunter Education Certificate. This will include a minimum score of 80% on the final exam. You must also demonstrate safe gun handling skills in the field and shooting courses. All students who complete the home study work and fully participate in the class and field sessions will easily pass this course and will have the skills and knowledge needed to become a safe and responsible hunter.

Requirements for Trapper Education Certification Course YOU MUST COMPLETE:

WHEN: Prior to Workshop

1. Trapper Education Home Study Materials: Home study materials will be sent to your home. You must complete certain sections of the study materials prior to the workshop (sections will be identified in the mailing).

2. Beginning Trapping (Class 1F): You must register for and complete this class at the workshop.

3. Reading Wildlife Sign Class: You must register for and complete one of the following classes:

3J. Reading Wildlife Sign-Indoors – Saturday Afternoon – Session 3 4J. Reading Wildlife Sign-Outdoors – Sunday Morning – Session 4

At the workshop: Friday 2:00-5:30 PM

Trapper Education Certification: All three components listed above must be successfully completed and you must score a minimum of 80% on the final exam to receive the NYS Trapper Education Certificate.
