Lea Leggitt, intern at Women’s Outdoor News, loved being backstage and on the red carpet at the Outdoor Channel’s Golden Moose Awards. She created a series of interviews, based on the theme of “Mentoring the Next Generation,” for her short interview time with each leading outdoor personality. In this installment, Lea talks to Katie Pavlich.
At the Outdoor Channel’s Golden Moose Awards I met Katie Pavlich. I learned that she is a very successful reporter, editor, author and television news commentator who supports Americans and our Constitution. She also is a firearms shooter and a hunter.
One of my favorite things of the evening happened when I told her about my assignment at the Golden Moose Awards for The WON. She asked me right away if I knew Barbara Baird, publisher of this site. Of course I do. It made me laugh.
I asked Katie about mentoring others.
I also asked her another question, since I am a hunter, too.
How did you get into hunting?
I owe everything to my dad for getting me into hunting. He’s been a hunting safety instructor for 30 years and, of course, is a long-time hunter himself. I am so grateful to him for sharing hunting with me; it is one of the greatest gifts I have ever received. He bought me my first hunting rifle with “Katie P.” embroidered on the sling for my 10th birthday. At age 11, I was elk and deer hunting in Arizona, climbing mountains, walking through the desert and taking in the view of the Grand Canyon. The most important lesson he ever taught me is that hunting isn’t about the kill, but about the experience.
